McCoubrey Farms is located on Highway 97, one mile south of the Winfield Town Centre in Lake Country BC. Sharon and Bob McCoubrey have farmed the 8 acre property since 1973, and have been certified organic by the North Okanagan Organic Association since 1989. We produce d' Anjou and Barlett pears and Yellow Transparent, McIntosh, Spartan and Red Delicious Apples, as well as small amounts of a variety of vegetables. New plantings over the past two years have added peaches, apricots, prune plums and peach plums, along with ten varieties of pears and thirty varieties of apples. These new trees will begin to produce over the next 2-3 years.
Our decision to convert the farm to organic production methods was stimulated by an intense dislike for applying synthetic pesticides, concern about the impact of our previous practices on the environment, frustration with poor financial returns for conventional fruit and frustration with the downward spiral of dependancy on pesticides which resulted from tackling pest problems with a narrow focus on "the pest", without considering the wider impact of the "magic bullet" chemical solutions.
After 14 years of farming organically, we would never go back to conventional methods. We are constantly searching for ways to improve our operation to minimize the impact on the environment while providing our customers with good wholesome food which they can trust. We try to market our produce as close to home as possible, to reduce the need for energy to move it to the final consumer.
We love to meet the folks who eat our fruit and vegetables, and welcome visits to the farm.
