Allow to ripen on the counter. Test for slight softness near the stem end (if you wait until the whole pear feels soft, they will be mushy/brown in the centre, as pears ripen from the inside out). Ripe pears should also have a nice fragrance. Bosc pears can also be enjoyed on the crunchy side if you prefer.
