Urban Harvest is 10 Years Old!
Added on January 13, 2010
Exactly 10 years ago (January 2000), we delivered our first produce boxes to 36 “pioneer” customers, packing the orders together (David & I) in our rented garage space. Much has changed since then, of course (we now deliver to 450-500 homes per week from a warehouse space, with a team of 6)…but we continue to keep our overhead low (for example, Christine and I share a tiny home-based office, and we STILL only have one proper delivery van!), so our focus can be on maximizing value for our customers while paying top prices to farmers and decent wages to our staff. In 2009 alone, we paid more than $380,000 directly to local growers and other food suppliers (dairy, eggs, tofu, etc.). Approximately $100,000 more was spent on organic produce from other parts of BC (bringing total BC spending close to $500,000), and a further $100,000 was paid out in wages for our 6 p/t employees. We are thrilled to be a part (albeit a small one) of a healthier food system, and we are grateful to all of our partners - our customers, suppliers, and staff – for supporting Urban Harvest!
